Are Poker Bots Illegal?

Poker bots are illegal under both US and international law. In the United States, bots are specifically prohibited by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA), which makes it a federal crime to use any device or software to place bets with a remote online gambling site.

The act also prohibits anyone from knowingly providing such devices or software to others. The prohibition extends to any form of poker, including Texas Hold’em and Omaha.

In the United Kingdom, poker bots are also illegal under the Gambling Act 2005. This law makes it an offense to use any device or software with the intention of enabling someone else to gamble illegally.

It is also an offense to provide such devices or software to someone else with that intention. The penalty for violating this law is a maximum fine of £5,000 (about $8,000) and six months in prison.
