Are Poker Rooms Legal in Ontario?

Poker rooms have been legal in Ontario since 2003. However, the province has not explicitly legalized them, leaving it up to individual municipalities to regulate them.

There are currently three poker rooms licensed by the Ontario Gaming and Lottery Commission: The Poker Room at The Queensway in Mississauga, The Poker Room at the Westin Toronto Centre, and The Poker Room at the Intercontinental Toronto Centre.

The legality of poker rooms has come under scrutiny in recent years. In January 2018, the City of Toronto passed a bylaw that would prohibit poker rooms from operating within its boundaries.

This bylaw was later overturned by a court ruling, but it has raised concerns about the future of poker rooms in Ontario.

Despite these concerns, there is evidence that poker rooms are having a positive impact on the gaming industry in Ontario. In 2017, poker rooms generated $13 million in revenue for the province.

This money is being used to support other casino activities, such as slot machine and table games. It is likely that the legalization of poker rooms will lead to even more money being generated for the province.
