In March of 2018, the Wall Street Journal published a report alleging that Bovada was using bots to artificially increase the number of bets placed on certain sports events. According to the report, Bovada was using a software program called “Matchbook” to place bets on sporting events in order to generate more revenue.
The Journal cited internal emails and documents that showed that Matchbook was used to place bets on NBA games, NFL games, and MLB games.
However, recent reports suggest that Matchbook is no longer in use at Bovada. In response to the allegations made by the Journal, William Hill issued a statement denying that its company used bots to artificially increase betting activity.
According to William Hill, Matchbook was used “to identify suspicious betting patterns” but was not used “to manipulate odds or game outcomes.”.
While it is still possible that Bovada uses bots to artificially increase betting activity on certain sports events, recent reports suggest that this is not the case. Therefore, it appears that Bovada does not use bots to artificially increase betting activity.
