How RAM Slots Work

A computer’s memory is composed of slots that hold RAM chips. When a computer needs to access a particular piece of data, it searches through the RAM until it finds the information it’s looking for.

RAM chips come in different sizes, and a computer can only access a certain number of them at once. When it needs to access a particular piece of data, the computer checks the size of the RAM chip and decides which one to use.

If there are no more appropriate RAM chips available, the computer will have to wait until another memory request comes in. This process is called “paging.”.
