1. Study the Rules of Texas Holdem Poker
Before you start playing, it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules of the game. This will help you understand how to play and make better decisions. There are a few key things to know about this popular card game:
-There are three cards dealt face down and one revealed at a time. The player with the best hand (with no other cards revealed) wins the pot.
If there is a tie, the pot is split evenly between the players involved.
-To win a hand, you must have a higher hand ranking than your opponents. In other words, if you have two queens, your opponents would have to have two sixes or better in order to win the hand.
You can also win if all of your opponents fold (which happens more often than not!).
-You can only make one bet per hand (unless you are playing Omaha or Seven Card Stud). This means that if you are playing with five other people at a table, and someone else makes a bet, you cannot put in another bet until everyone else has put in their bets (unless someone calls your bet). This is an important rule to remember when playing Texas Holdem poker!
2. Learn How to Play Basic Poker Hand Rankings
In order to make better decisions when playing Texas Holdem poker, it is important to understand how different hands rank. There are seven basic poker hands: high card (Ace through Two), two pair (two cards of the same rank), three of a kind (3 cards of the same rank), straight (5 cards in sequence), flush (five cards of the same suit), full house (three of a kind plus a pair), and four of a kind (four cards of the same rank). Here is how each hand ranks:
-High card (Ace through Two) ranks highest and wins any hand sans flush or full house. For example, if you were playing with three other people at a table and had A-2 as your high card, you would win every hand! However, if you were playing with four other people at a table and A-2 was their high card, they would lose every hand because their high card does not qualify as a flush or full house!
-Two pair ranks second highest and wins any hand sans high card or straight draw. For example, if you were playing with three other people at a table and had A-2 as your two pair alongside K-Q-7 as another player’s high card, both players would win half the time! Again, however, if you were playing with four other people at a table and A-2 was their two pair alongside K-Q-7 as another player’s two pair, both players would lose every time! Two pair is considered one rank higher than three of a kind because Ace is considered one rank higher than 2nd place on an Ace through Two ranking list.
So in this example K-Q-7 would be considered 2nd place on an Ace through Two ranking list while A-2 would be considered 3rd place on an Ace through Two ranking list).
-Three of kind ranks third highest and wins any hand sans two pairs or higher ranked hands like three of kind or higher straight draw hands like 7s 8s 9d 10c etc. For example, if you were playing with three other people at a table and had 7s 8s 9d 10c as your three of kind alongside K-Q-7 as another player’s three of kind, both players would win half the time! Again however if you were playing with four other people at a table and 7s 8s 9d 10c was their three of kind alongside K-Q-7 as another player’s three of kind both players would lose every time! Three of kinds are considered one rank lower than two pairs because 3rd place on an Ace through Two ranking list has more cards then 2nd place on that Ace through Two ranking list which has 2nd place having 1 more card then 1st place on that Ace through Two ranking list which has Ace having 1 more card then 2nd place on that Ace through Two ranking list).
So in this example 7s 8s 9d 10c would be considered 2nd place on an Ace through Two ranking list while 7h 8g 9h 10c would be considered 3rd place on an Ace through Two ranking list). There is no such thing as 4th place on an Ace through Two ranking list because there are only two different suits which means no matter what rank 4th place falls under it falls between 2nd place and 3rd place on that ace through two ranking list).
