How Does a Poker Chip Run Work?

When someone bets on a hand of poker, they are betting that the particular hand will have a particular outcome. The most common bets are called “ins” (to put in the pot) and “outs” (to take out of the pot).

When someone insures (bets) on a hand, they are saying that they think that the hand will have an outcome in which they will win money. Conversely, when someone outs (takes money out of the pot), they are saying that they think the hand will have an outcome in which they will lose money.

When a bet is placed, each player takes turns placing chips into the pot. The dealer places a chip into the pot for each player, and then sets another chip next to it so that it is visible but not visible to any other players.

The dealer then turns over the top card of the deck, and everyone flips over their chips to see what color they are. A player can either keep their original chip or switch it with one of their neighbors’ chips.

Once everyone has flipped over their chips, the player with the highest ranking card from the deck – which is called “the face” – reveals it and sets it down on the table in front of them. All other players who have chips in front of them place those chips beside their original chip, so that everyone has a clear record of how much money is in the pot.

If there is more than one player with an equal ranking card, then a tie-breaker is used to determine who gets to place their chip in the pot first. This tie-breaker may be based on any number of factors – including how many chips each player has already placed into the pot, or how many face cards each player has revealed.

Regardless of how this tie-breaker is decided, once a player has placed their chip into the pot, no other player can change their mind and take it back – even if they have a better ranking card than the currently placed chip.

Once all players have placed their chips into the pot, the dealer reveals the second card from the deck and starts playing it like normal. The game continues like this until one player either wins all of their cards (called “winning”) or all other players have lost all of their cards (called “losing”). At this point, that player collects all of the money in the pot and walks away with it – Congratulations! Poker is now over!.
