How Does Counting Cards Work in Blackjack?

A casino Blackjack dealer deals two cards face down to each player, one card at a time. The player must then place an bet (usually a number between 1 and 21) and the dealer places a second card face down on the table next to the first.

If the player’s total equals or exceeds 21 (the house edge), the casino wins. If not, the player loses.

At this point, the dealer flips over the top card of their deck – this is their “point” – and sets it in front of them. This is also their “second” card. The player now has two options: they can either keep their original bet, or double it. If they double it, they now have 4 cards to work with (2 face down, 2 face up).

They can either keep all 4 cards or choose any two to form a new bet (this is where some players get creative and make wild bets like “push all-in”). If they choose any two cards to form a new bet, those are now their new point and second card. The process repeats until someone either loses all of their points or goes over 21 (in which case they win).
