How Is a Roulette Table Laid Out?

A roulette table is traditionally laid out like this: there are a series of pockets at one end of the table and a wheel at the other. The pockets are numbered from 1 to 36, with 18 being the “zero” pocket. The wheel has 36 slots, each corresponding to a different number. As players place bets on the numbers they want to see come up, the croupier spins the wheel and lets it fall into one of the pockets.

If it falls into a pocket with a bet already placed on it, the bet is matched and the ball is dropped into the pocket. If it falls into a pocket without a bet already placed on it, the croupier pays out the amount of the bet in cash to whichever player’s chip was closest to the ball when it fell into the pocket.
