Department of Justice (DOJ) has aggressively pursued online gambling companies that have not obtained a license from the DOJ. In March of this year, DOJ announced that it had reached an agreement with William Hill Plc, one of the largest UK-based online gambling companies, to settle allegations that the company had operated without a license in the United States since 2006. DOJ threatened to prosecute William Hill Plc if it did not agree to pay a USD $135 million fine and provide DOJ with information about its operations in the United States. If BetOnline AG does not obtain a license from DOJ, it could face similar penalties.
