Is Bovada Illegal?

Bovada is a website that allows bettors to place wagers on sporting events. In October of 2018, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it was investigating Bovada for possible violations of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

The UIGEA is a federal law that prohibits online gambling and establishes criminal penalties for individuals who engage in online gambling activities.

The DOJ has alleged that Bovada operates as an online gambling site and has violated the UIGEA. Specifically, the DOJ has alleged that Bovada allows US citizens to place bets on sporting events and share in the proceeds from those bets, despite knowing that doing so violates the UIGEA.

If found guilty, Bovada could be subject to significant fines and penalties.

While it is still unclear whether or not Bovada has actually violated the UIGEA, the DOJ’s investigation into the company underscores the importance of complying with federal lAWS governing online gambling. If you are involved in any form of online gambling activity, be sure to comply with all relevant lAWS and regulations.
