Is Online Poker Legal in California?

The answer to this question is complicated and depends on a variety of factors unique to each individual state. In general, however, online poker is generally legal in most states.

California is no exception. As of January 2014, the California Gambling Control Commission (GCC) ruled that online poker was a game of skill and therefore allowed under state law.

This means that operators of online poker sites registered with the GCC are allowed to operate without fear of legal action from the state.

However, there are still some caveats. For example, players in California are not allowed to bet real money on online poker games. Instead, they must wager virtual chips which represent their playing power.

In addition, while online poker is legal in California, operators are not required to offer games to residents. So while Californians can play online poker, they may not have access to the best selection or most competitive games.

All things considered, however, it appears that online poker is generally legal in California. Operators should consult with local authorities before launching any new games, but in general they should be able to operate without major issues.
