Is Online Poker Legal in Tennessee?

Tennessee has a relatively new, murky law with regards to online poker. The state has been slow to develop a specific framework for regulating the activity, and lawmakers have been hesitant to legalize it outright.

However, recent case law has indicated that online poker is legal in Tennessee.

In 2010, the Tennessee Supreme Court upheld a lower court decision that allowed the state’s Poker Players Alliance (PPA) to offer online poker games to its members. The PPA had challenged the legality of the state’s Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act (UGEA), but the Supreme Court found that the Act did not specifically Target online poker.

In 2011, the Tennessee legislature passed a bill legalizing online poker games within state borders. However, this legislation was vetoed by then-Governor Bill Haslam.

As a result, the legality of online poker in Tennessee remains unclear and may change at any time.
