Is Poker Back in Atlantic City?

Poker is once again being played in Atlantic City casinos. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement issued a license to the newly-formed PokerStars NJ subsidiary last week.

The move comes as a surprise, as regulators had been warning casinos that the poker giant was considering pulling out of the state because of new rules prohibiting certain forms of gambling. But PokerStars NJ officials said that the company is committed to continuing to operate in Atlantic City and that it will work with regulators to comply with the new regulations.

PokerStars NJ is the latest in a line of poker companies to enter the Atlantic City market. The original PokerStars company stopped operating in the city in 2008 after running into regulatory problems.

Since then, three other poker companies have attempted to establish themselves in Atlantic City, but all have failed.

The resurgence of poker in Atlantic City could be due, in part, to the recent legalization of online poker in New Jersey. That law took effect last month and allows residents over the age of 21 to play online poker without having to travel to Nevada or Delaware, two states where online poker is legal.
