a heart or a diamond), and three which will be face cards (typically Ace, Two, and Three). Because there are five possible hands, and each has an equal chance of being drawn, the odds of any given poker hand are 1 in 52. .
However, the odds of drawing a specific hand vary depending on the particular poker game being played. For example, in Omaha Hi-Lo games, the odds of hitting a royal flush (a five-of-a-kind) are 1 in 21 million. In contrast, the odds of hitting a straight (four cards including no jokers) are 1 in 449 thousand.
This variation is due to the fact that different poker games have different rules governing how particular hands can be achieved – for example, in Omaha Hi-Lo games, all four suits can be combined for a straight draw, while in Texas Hold’em only two suits can be combined (i.e. two pair).
