What Does the Dealer Do in Blackjack?

In blackjack, the dealer is responsible for dealing cards to players. The dealer also collects money from the players and pays the house. In a basic game, the dealer deals two cards face down to each player. The player then looks at their card and decides whether to stay or hit. If the player decides to hit, they flip over their card and take their bet (usually half of their original bet).

If the player decides to stay, they keep their original bet and draw another card. The dealer then either flips over another card or stops dealing cards. The game continues in this way until one player has no more cards or until the dealer decks (or “flips” – in some versions of blackjack, a card is placed face up in front of the dealer, with all other cards hidden, so that all players have an equal chance of drawing a new card). In some variations of blackjack, such as Texas Hold’em poker, after everyone has had a chance to draw cards and make bets, the dealer deals another round of hands – this time with replacement dealers.
