4-Bets in Poker
In poker, a 4-bet is a type of bet where the player making the bet puts money into the pot preflop and then calls any threerd party bets that are made. This is in contrast to a 3-bet, which is where the player makes the bet, and then only calls if they are ahead.
A 4-bet is therefore a way to increase one’s potential profit potential by calling more hands than one would otherwise.
Since 4-bets are more expensive to make than 3-bets, they’re typically used when the player feels confident that they can win the hand. For example, if you’re playing against an opponent who often folds preflop, you might decide to make a 4-bet with hopes of getting them to fold more often.
Conversely, if you’re playing against an opponent who likes to play tight preflop, you might choose not to make a 4-bet at all.
