What Is a High Card in Poker?

When two players are in a hand of poker, one may have a high card, which is defined as an Ace, Two, Three, or Four. When this happens, the player with the high card has an advantage over the other player. The high card gives that player an automatic win in most cases. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule.

If the high card is a Five or Six, then the low card is used to determine who wins the hand. In other words, whoever has the lower card (two through ten) wins the hand.
