What Is a Roulette Wheel Called?

A roulette wheel is a device used in casinos to spin a cylinder of metal with numbers printed on it. The numbers on the wheel are called “pence” (from French pence, meaning “thousandth”). When a player puts money into the casino slot machine or table, the casino employee will give them a ticket with a number on it. The player then selects one of the numbers on their ticket and places it over the number on the roulette wheel.

As the wheel spins, it will randomly choose one of the numbers on the ticket to be highlighted and announced to the player. If this number is selected, then the player is paid out according to how much money was placed into their machine or table as indicated by that number.
