What Is the 2/4 Rule in Poker?

The 2/4 Rule in Poker
Most poker players know the 2/4 rule, which states that in a hand with two cards to be revealed, the player with the two high cards (A and K) leads. If both players have two high cards, the player with the lower card (J, 9, 8 or T) leads. If both players have one card higher than their low card, then the player with the lower card leads.
The 2/4 rule is an important part of poker strategy because it can help you make better decisions when bluffing and playing hands. For example, if you have a A-K and your opponent has a J-Q, leading with A gives you the best chance of winning because your opponent has to either fold or call with a 5 or a 4.

However, if your opponent has a K-Q, leading with A is less likely to win because your opponent could potentially call with a 9 or an 8. Leading with K instead gives you a better chance of winning because your opponent has to either fold or call with a 3 or a 2.
Keep in mind that the 2/4 rule applies only to hands with two cards to be revealed. If there are more cards in the hand (for example, if there are three cards), then the rule changes based on which card is lower: if the card is lower than both of the other cards, then the player with the Lowest card leads; if it’s higher than one of the other cards but lower than both others, then it’s followed by whichever card is higher than both other cards; and finally if it’s higher than all three other cards, then it’s followed by whoever has the highest card in that position.
