What Is the Evolved Form of Roulette?

Roulette is a casino game that was originally derived from ancient Roman chariot races. Today, roulette is still a popular game among many casino patrons.

The evolution of roulette can be broken down into two distinct phases: the French and American versions.

The French version of roulette was created in the late 1800s by Charles Feydeau. The game involved a wheel with 36 slots, each occupied by a different number from 1 to 36.

A ball was placed at the center of the wheel and players bet on whether it would drop through one of the slots. The player who guessed correctly won the wager, and the player who lost had to pay back their bet plus an additional sum of money.

The American version of roulette was created in 1892 by George Devol followed shortly thereafter by Edward Thorp. In this version, the wheel had only 36 slots and the ball was not placed at the center; players instead bet on numbers around the wheel.

The player who guessed correctly won the wager, and any player who lost had to pay back their bet plus an additional sum of money.

Over time, various variations of roulette emerged, including American Roulette with black and red numerals on a green background; Double Roulette with two balls; European Roulette with a single ball that is dropped into one of 36 numbered pockets at the center of the table; and French Roulette with similar rules as American Roulette but with different numbers on each slot machine so that no two machines have the same number (making it more difficult to predict which number will be selected).
