What Size Saw for Fret Slots?

There are a few factors to consider when choosing the right size saw for fret slots. The saw’s blade size, the thickness of the fret board, and the router bit size all need to be considered.

For fret slots that are less than 1/4 inch thick, a small saw blade is adequate. For 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch thick slots, a medium-sized blade should be used.

For slots that are 3/8 inch thick or thicker, a large blade should be used.

In order to prevent tear-out, it is important to use the correct bit size for the saw blade. A standard router bit size for fret slot routing is 1/2 inch.

If a larger bit size is used, such as 3/4 inch, the router will overhang the edges of the slot and may cause tear-out.
