What Was the Purpose of Russian Roulette?

Russian roulette is a game in which a player takes a bullet from a revolver and spins the cylinder. Each time the revolver is spun, the player guesses which chamber holds the bullet. If the player guesses correctly, they are allowed to pull the trigger, and if they guess incorrectly, they are allowed to spin the cylinder again. The game is played with a group of people, and typically one person is designated as the “bettor” or “banker.” The banker is responsible for keeping track of the number of bullets in the revolver, as well as how many shots have been fired. The banker also determines who will be playing next.

When it is the banker’s turn, they place their finger on the gun barrel and pull it back until it clicks into place. This signals to everyone else that they are ready to spin the cylinder. Once everyone has spun the cylinder, the banker removes their finger from the gun barrel and reveals which bullet was shot out of the revolver. If any player guessed incorrectly, that player loses whatever money they have put into the game so far.
