When Can You Bet in Blackjack?

In blackjack, players are dealt two cards face down, then another two cards are turned over, one at a time. The player must decide whether to “stand” (put their original bet back in the pot) or “hit” (take another card and add it to their current total).

If the player hits, they receive the Ace of Spades as a bonus, and the dealer replaces any other card with the Ace of Spades. If the player stands, they lose their original bet.

The objective is to get as close to 21 as possible – this is known as “gambling”. In order to win, you must have a higher total than your opponent plus the dealer’s hand (or “black”).

If you are dealt a 10 or a Jack, for example, your total would be 20 and you would lose. If you are dealt an Ace of Spades however, your total would be 21 and you would win.

There is no set rule on when you can start betting in blackjack – it depends on how many players are playing and how much money each has bet. Generally speaking however, it is advisable to start betting around half of what you are risking – for example if you have $20 in your pocket and want to bet $40, start by putting $10 into the pot.
