When Can You Double Up in Blackjack?

There are two main ways to double up in blackjack – by splitting cards and by doubling down. In split cards, you either take another card, or draw two cards.

If you have a higher total than the dealer, you can double up by betting again and adding the total of your new and original bets to the original bet. If you have a lower total, you can only double up if the dealer also doubles down. .

Doubling down is a bit more complicated. You must first place another bet equal to the original amount plus any additional chips you may have left.

Then, you draw two cards and compare their values to your original bet. If the new total is higher than the original bet, you can claim the double winnings and discard any cards that did not contribute to that total.

When can these strategies be used The answer is different for every situation, but generally speaking, split cards can be used anytime there is a tie or if one player has a very high total (over 21). Doubling down is most advantageous when the original bet is close to or less than your current chips.
