When Did Online Poker Become Legal Again?

Online poker was once again legal in the United States on December 12th of 2018, after being outlawed by the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. This act made it a federal crime to knowingly participate in online poker, and as such, online poker companies were forced to operate outside of the U.S. In May of 2018, the Department of Justice filed a motion to dismiss a case against five online poker companies that were operating in the U. under state law.

The dismissal was based on the fact that the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act did not make participating in online poker illegal under state law. As a result, these companies were not violating federal law. On December 12th of 2018, the Department of Justice announced that it had reached an agreement with five online poker companies to re-enter the U. under state law and regulated by the Nevada Gaming Commission.
