Counting cards is illegal in blackjack because it gives the player an unfair advantage. The dealer must receive a certain number of cards before he or she can begin counting, and if the dealer knows the player is counting cards, then the dealer can make more advantageous bets.
This increases the likelihood that the player will win, even if he or she does not have a good hand.
