Why Is It Called a Boat in Poker?

Boat in poker refers to a hand with two cards of the same rank, preferably a high card and a low card. In poker, this hand is usually considered the worst possible hand, as it gives the player only two chances to make a bet.

The term “boat” comes from the game of Craps, where it is also known as “rolling house.” In Craps, players can make bets on any combination of dice.

When two dice are rolled and they come up with the same number, that is called a “boat,” and the player can either keep the dice (and lose the bet) or put them back in the pot (and win the bet). The name stuck and is now used in other card games as well.
