Why Is It Called a Gutshot in Poker?

When someone takes a gutshot – a strong, direct hit to the gut – in poker, it is typically considered a very bad play. The reason for this is simple: the gut is a vulnerable area, and a gutshot often results in the player being forced to put all of their chips in the pot pre-flop.

This can be a very bad decision, as not only will the player likely lose their entire stack, but they may also give up a lot of potential opportunities to win later in the hand.
