Why Was SpongeBob’s Cousin BlackJack So Small?

SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated television series created by American animator and cartoonist Stephen Hillenburg. The show is a satirical take on the classic cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants, who lives in an underwater community called Bikini Bottom with his best friend Patrick Star.

One of SpongeBob’s neighbors is a small, black, squid-like creature named BlackJack.

BlackJack first appeared in the episode “The Krusty Krab Training Video” as a customer who constantly threated to quit unless he was given better service. SpongeBob quickly learns that BlackJack is actually Squidward’s cousin, and the two become good friends.

In later episodes, BlackJack is often depicted as being very small and weak, which often frustrates him. For example, in “Squidward Meets His Match,” BlackJack gets frustrated when Squidward effortlessly tosses him around like a rag doll.

Some viewers have speculated that BlackJack’s small size may be due to his race or social status. Some have suggested that BlackJack is deliberately depicted as small in order to reflect the experiences of marginalized communities in society, such as people of color or low-income individuals.

Others have suggested that the small size is simply an accurate depiction of how Squidward perceives BlackJack to be. Regardless of the reason behind BlackJack’s size, his character and interactions with SpongeBob are still enjoyable and relatable to viewers.
