Will Online Poker Return to the US?

Since the US Department of Justice shut down the world’s largest online poker site, PokerStars, in 2011, the industry has been struggling. This has caused a decrease in players and led to the closure of several smaller sites.

However, there are indications that online poker may be making a comeback in the US.

In March 2018, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement announced that it had reached a settlement with two online poker companies, Absolute Poker and Betfair Poker, that will allow them to open new accounts in the state. This is significant because it shows that the industry is continuing to grow despite earlier setbacks.

In May 2018, a bill was introduced in the New Jersey Assembly that would legalize and regulate online poker in the state. If passed, it would be the first piece of legislation to be introduced in response to increasing demand from players and operators.

Despite these positive developments, it is still unclear whether online poker will return to the US as a whole. There are several challenges that must be overcome before this can happen.

These include convincing regulators that online poker is safe and fair, overcoming legal hurdles posed by other states, and establishing trust with players who might be hesitant to switch back to an unregulated industry. However, if these challenges can be overcome, online poker could once again become a major part of American gambling culture.
