In the United States, online poker is still illegal at the federal level. However, several states have legalized and regulated online poker, with some offering tax breaks and other benefits to players. In July of 2013, the US Department of Justice announced that it would not be pursuing any prosecutions against operators of online poker sites in states that have legalized and regulated the game. This leaves the legality of online poker in the US up to individual states.
In general, however, online poker is considered legal in most states if it is played within the confines of state lAWS. Players should check with their state’s gaming commission to be sure.
While online poker is still technically illegal in the US at a federal level, this does not mean that players cannot play the game. In fact, many operators offer US players access to their sites via VPNs and other methods.
Keep in mind that playing online poker illegally carries risks, including possible criminal penalties and blacklisting from major online Poker sites. However, for many Americans who enjoy playing casino games and other types of poker, playing online is one way to do so without breaking any lAWS.
