Did a Monk Invent Roulette?

A monk named John Hennigan is often credited with inventing roulette in 1721. This is not entirely accurate, as roulette had been played for centuries prior to that.

However, Hennigan is generally recognized as the person who popularized the game and made it widely available.

Roulette has been around for centuries, but it wasn’t until 1721 that the game was actually invented by John Hennigan. He reportedly developed the game while gambling in a French casino.

The modern version of roulette features 36 numbered pockets on a spinning wheel, and players bet on which number will come up next.
