What Is a Straddle in Poker?

A straddle is a bet in poker that is made when two or more players have the same number of cards in their hands. In order to make a straddle, one player must put money into the pot equal to the number of cards in their hand plus two. For example, if a player has five cards, they would put $6 into the pot ($5 + $1). If another player also has five cards, they would also put $6 into the pot ($5 + $1 + $1).

The player with the highest card in their hand ( Ace through Ten) would then get to choose which card to “straddle” – this means to put both of their cards into the pot. When straddling, it is important to note that you cannot split a straddle. If you have an Ace and a Two, for example, you would need to put all of your money into the pot.
