What Is a Whale in Poker?

Whales in poker can refer to either players who are considered to be exceptionally skilled at the game, or those who have won a large amount of money at it. Whales can also be referred to as “big-money players.”

The term “whale” is often used in poker in a derogatory way, to describe a player who is very good at the game and is likely to win money consistently. However, there are also whales who play for fun and enjoy the competition, and who may not ever win a large amount of money at poker.

A whale in poker is usually defined as a player who has won more than $10,000 in one day at the tables. Some players might be considered whales even if they have only won $5,000 or $10,000 in total over the course of several months or years.

A player who has won millions of dollars at poker is sometimes called a “mega- whale.”.
