What Is It Called When You Go Over in Blackjack?

When a player goes over in blackjack, it is called a “loss.” The basic rule of blackjack is that if you have more cards than the dealer, you win. If the dealer has more cards, the player loses. When a player goes over, their hand is reduced to a single card, and the dealer adds that card to their hand.

So in the event of a tie, both players end up with two cards. This can be very advantageous for the player if the two cards are different colors (a pair), as this means they get to keep both of them. However, if the two cards are both face values (two 10s), then the player automatically loses.
