What Is Poker and How Is It Played?

Poker is a popular card game that is played with a deck of 52 cards. The object of the game is to make as many combinations of cards as possible, using any combination of face cards (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) and 10s. The combination of the highest card in the hand and the ten is called a “full house”. The next highest combination is a “flush” (3 of a kind), followed by two pair (one pair consisting of two cards of the same rank, like two sixes).

A straight (a sequence of five consecutive cards all of the same rank) is the next highest hand and wins only if it is combined with another Straight or Full House. If one does not have either a Straight or Full House, then they are said to have “three-of-a-kind”. There are also hands called “two pair” and “one pair” which are less valuable than other hands. The final type of hand is called a “high card” which means that the player has only one card left in their hand.
