Poker is a game of high-stakes Texas hold ’em, with a ranking system that determines how much money each player can win. The ranking starts at 1, and players are “put in the pot” in order of ranking. The first player to put all of their chips in the pot (called “sitting out”) is the high roller. The second player is “lowball” and must put in half the amount of chips as the high roller.
Third through fifth are “middle” and must put in three quarters as much as the high roller, and so on. If a player does not have any chips left, they are “called.” .
There are nine ranks in poker, with one exception: The Ace is ranked as the Lowest card. Kings are two cards higher than Aces and Queens are three cards higher than Kings.
In Texas hold ’em, there are three types of hands: straight, flush, and full house. A straight is five cards of the same suit, like 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
A flush is four cards of the same suit, like 7, 8, 9, 10. And a full house is three cards of the same suit plus one other card (for example: KJ43). .
A player’s hand is worth more depending on how high up on the hierarchy their ranking is. For instance: A low hand (2s 3s 4s) is worth less than a middle hand (A9s KJ7).
High hands (A10s KQ8) are worth more than low hands (2s 3s 4s).
There’s also a betting structure in poker that determines how much money players can win or lose based on their hand. There are three main betting levels: preflop (before any cards have been dealt), flop (two cards have been revealed), and turn (three cards have been revealed).
Preflop betting starts with the person to the left of the dealer; then it goes clockwise around the table. Flop betting continues as before; however, after everyone has put money into the pot preflop, there’s a new round of flop betting called “pot-limit.
” In pot-limit betting everyone puts in an amount based on how many raises they’re willing to make; for example if someone has four chips and wants to bet $2 per turn they would put $4 into the pot total ($8 total). Turn betting starts with whoever has first position after all bets have been placed; then it goes around clockwise again.
