Who Invented the Game of Poker?

The game of poker is believed to have originated in India in the 6th century. It rapidly spread to Europe, where it became a popular card game. In 1849, Charles de Montesquieu wrote about poker in his book The Spirit of the LAWS. This book is credited with popularizing the game among French nobility.

In 1857, American David Howard invented a version of poker that used 52 cards instead of the traditional 52-card deck. This version became known as Texas hold ’em. In 1887, Joseph “Poker Joe” Kennedy made a bet with fellow poker player George Fullerton that he could win at least $5,000 in six hands of poker. Kennedy won the bet and became known as “Poker Joe.”.
