Why Is Russian Roulette Called Russian Roulette?

Russian roulette is a game of chance in which a player spins a cylinder containing six chambers, each with a different number of bullets. The player who guesses the number of bullets in the chamber with the most bullets wins the game.

The name Russian roulette is derived from the Russian language, where it is known as русская роза (ruskaia roza).

The game has been around for centuries and is believed to have originated in France. It was first documented in 1697 in the book Réflexions sur la folie du jeu du pelletier (Reflections on the Madness of the Pelletier Game), written by Philippe de La Barre.

In this book, La Barre describes a game he had played with a friend named Monsieur de Saint-Fargeau: Saint-Fargeau put a revolver to his head and pulled the trigger, but nothing happened; he then put the revolver to his friend’s head and pulled the trigger, and this time it fired. La Barre assumed that Saint-Fargeau had loaded the weapon with blanks, and he writes about this game to illustrate how easy it is for someone to gamble with death.

The modern version of Russian roulette was created by an American named Henry Jennings in 1892. Jennings was working in Monte Carlo at the time and created Russian roulette as an attraction at one of the casinos there.

The game quickly became popular and spread to other casinos around the world.
