Why Was Blackjack Mulligan in Jail?

Blackjack Mulligan was arrested on charges of robbery and grand larceny after allegedly stealing a backpack and laptop from a 71-year-old woman in Queens on July 9th. The victim told the New York Post that she had been waiting for the bus when she saw Mulligan allegedly steal her bag.

She chased him down, caught up to him, and held onto the backpack until police arrived. Inside the bag, police found the victim’s laptop and cash.

Mulligan was arraigned on July 10th and is currently in jail awaiting a court appearance. The robbery and grand larceny charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, but according to the Post, prosecutors are likely to seek a shorter sentence due to Mulligan’s mental health history.

Mulligan has a history of mental illness and has been hospitalized at least three times in the past year for psychiatric issues.

Mulligan’s lawyer told the Post that his client is “a very disturbed individual” who is currently undergoing treatment for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. However, prosecutors have argued that Mulligan should not be given leniency because he showed no remorse after allegedly committing the crime.

Despite his mental health issues, Mulligan has never before been arrested or charged with a crime. This case may set an example for other mentally ill criminals who may be more likely to commit crimes if they believe they will not be caught or punished.
