How Do Poker Tournament Payouts Work?

The payout structure for poker tournaments is complex and can be confusing. In a nutshell, the payout structure works as follows:

1. The first place finisher in a poker tournament receives a payment based on how many points they earned.

For example, the first place finisher in a $100 tournament would receive $10 in prize money.

2. The second place finisher receives $9 in prize money, and so on down to the fifth place finisher, who receives $1 in prize money.

3. Any player who finishes in sixth or higher place receives no prize money at all.

4. Any player who finishes in first or second place but does not earn any points (due to being eliminated early, for example) still receives their entry fee back from the tournament organizers.
