Is Online Poker Legal in NJ?

The legality of online poker in New Jersey is still up for debate. In 2009, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement released a report concluding that online poker was not a game of skill, which would make it illegal under state law. However, the report was met with criticism from experts who argued that the criteria for determining skill were too subjective and that other games such as blackjack and roulette could also be considered games of skill. The New Jersey Assembly passed a bill in 2011 that would have legalized online poker but it was vetoed by then-Governor Jon Corzine.

In 2013, the state’s gaming commission released another report concluding that online poker was a game of skill. However, this report was also met with criticism from experts who argued that the criteria for determining skill were still too subjective. As of now, it is legal to play online poker in New Jersey but the legality of online gambling in general is still up for debate.
