What Are SFP Slots Used For?

Regular computer networking cables have a type-A connector on one end and a type-B connector on the other. SFP (small form factor plug) slots are designed for use with small form factor plugs, such as those that fit in a RJ-45 port.

An SFP slot is inserted into the type-A connector on one end of the cable, and the type-B connector on the other end is plugged into the SFP. The SFP provides the extra bandwidth necessary for high-speed networking connections.

An SFP slot can be found almost anywhere there’s a need for extra bandwidth, including in switches, routers, and other networking devices. Many times, an SFP slot is used in conjunction with an uplink port on a switch to provide backup connectivity in case of a cable or power outage.
