In poker, the term “hold’em” refers to a type of poker where players compete against each other by making hands (called “bluffs”) with cards that have been dealt face down. The object of the game is to make the other player fold their cards, or else to make them give up their best hand by playing a higher-ranked hand.
The most common type of hold’em is where each player is given five cards, with two face down and three face up. Players can then either choose to keep their cards or put them all into play.
If a player has a better hand than the one that’s been played so far, they can force their opponent to fold by playing a higher-ranked hand. If the other player has a higher-ranked hand than what they’re playing, they can put the new cards into play and wait for the other player to make a mistake.
There are also variations of hold’em where players are given fewer cards (two, three, or four), or where there are no face down cards at all. In these variations, players must figure out what everyone else’s hands are before making any decisions.
