When it comes to casino poker, there are three main types: Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hi-Lo, and Seven-Card Stud. Each has its own unique rules and strategies that must be learned in order to be successful at playing poker in a casino.
Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker game played in casinos. It is a five-card draw game with two rounds of betting. The first round of betting is preflop, and the second round of betting is flop. After those two rounds of betting, the board is revealed, and the remainder of the hand is played postflop.
The basic strategy for Texas Hold’em is to try to make as many hands as possible where you have the best hand. There are numerous ways to win a hand of Texas Hold’em, but the most common ways are to have a high card or a pair.
Omaha Hi-Lo is similar to Texas Hold’em, but with different rules for preflop and postflop betting. In Omaha Hi-Lo, there are three rounds of preflop betting followed by one round of postflop betting. The first two rounds of preflop betting are identical to the rules for Texas Hold’em, but the third round of preflop betting is different. In Omaha Hi-Lo, after the player has seen their cards, they may either call (put money into the pot) or raise (add more money to the pot).
After preflop betting is complete, players then see their cards again during postflop betting and may call or raise again. There are also different rules for flop and turn cards in Omaha Hi-Lo than in Texas Hold’em. For example, in Omaha Hi-Lo a player can only call if they have a straight or better on the flop card and can only raise if they have a higher card than all other players combined (a straight or better plus another flush or better).
Seven-Card Stud is similar to Omaha Hi-Lo in that there are three rounds of preflop betting followed by one round of postflop betting. However, unlike Omaha Hi-Lo where players can only call or raise with certain cards (e.g., Aces high), Seven-Card Stud allows any card to be called or raised with equal chances (i.e., every card has an equal chance of being called).
After preflop betting is complete, players then see their cards again during postflop bidding and can elect to fold (give up), call (put money into the pot), or raise (add more money to the pot). Like Omaha Hi-Lo, there are different rules for flop and turn cards in Seven-Card Stud than in Texas Hold’em. For example, in Seven Card Stud a player can only call if they have an Ace high or better on the flop card and can only raise if they have either an Ace high or another Ace that matches another player’s card (i.e., two Aces).
