How Does a Roulette Wheel Work?

Roulette wheels are simple devices with a lot of hidden complexity. They are made up of a number of small, circular metal plates that rotate around a central axis.

As the wheel turns, the metal plates create a random pattern on the roulette table. This pattern is what players use to bet on which number will be selected next by the ball.

The ball is actually mounted on a metal track that circles around the wheel as it spins. When the ball reaches a particular spot on the track, the track carries the ball to one of several small cUPS that are mounted on the wheel.

Each cup has either black or red balls inside it, and as the ball falls into one of them, it starts to spin around.

The roulette wheel is carefully calibrated so that each cup has exactly 18 black and 18 red balls. When the ball falls into one of the cUPS, its position on the wheel is recorded by a sensor.

This information is then used to randomly select one of 36 possible numbers that can be shown on a screen in front of the player.
